GP appointments can be taken up a lot with this topic and is NOT to be discounted on the seriousness that it can have on the individual that suffers with it. In fact, there is a (DLQI) Dermatology Quality Life Index screen that is used to assess the patient's mental health and well being with this.
Person's suffering with acne can become introverted , cancel going out with friends, apply heavy make up to conceal the skin and feel ugly as well as distraught with the way they perceive they look, increased anxiety with all of this which is increased again tenfold when sly glances / comments are made their way.
Acne Vulgaris ( Official dermatology diagnosis) is a chronic inflammatory disease which causes blockage of the hair follicles and associated sebaceous glands. resulting in the formation of blackheads , whiteheads, pustules , nodules and cysts. Acne is a chronic disease which can be controlled but there is potentially no long term cure, this means that treatment can be successful but due to the nature of acne there is no long term resolution.
The most common areas for acne to develop is the face, back, shoulders and chest. The reason for this are the oil glands being at their most dense in these areas.
Acne is probably one of the most skin conditions and the one which most of us at some point will have suffered from whether in childhood/ teenage/ early adult hood to the perimenopause and menopause where it is now becoming more common. It is more common in males than females in adolescence. Approx 3.5 million appointments in Primary care are made for this condition - YOU ARE NOT ALONE WITH THIS CONDITION.
Why do people suffer with acne?
There is no one particular reason-
Acne is complex and has a number of factors causing the condition-
We all know it occurs in Puberty and this is because of the male hormone Testosterone - As a female , we also have a small amount of testosterone. Testosterone impacts the oil glands causing the lining to become sticky and then joining together in a cluster, the final part of this process is that the pores then become blocked and a bacteria Propionbacterium P which is on our skin will group together creating inflammation and deep spots.
Looking at your family history, research has shown that genetics can play an important role in the diagnosis of acne. Most times a relative will have had symptoms of acne.
As with most skin conditions and some other medical conditions there are factors which you are unable to control and these are 2 of them.
Other factors which can come into the wider thought process for acne are
So, Forehead acne can be the result of hair gels, safety hats, uniform hats or fringe as hair will rub on the forehead which would cause irritation and in turn block the pores creating an inflammatory response.
Did you know that your mobile phone may be the cause of spots to your chin and cheek, this is because your touchscreen has bacteria to the surface and when the area is hot through contact to your face alongside the pressure from the contact could activate the sebaceous glands which may cause spots.
Whilst discussing the jaw and lower cheek , men's shaving products will cause inflammation and folliculitis ( Blocked hair follicles)
For women. 25 years and upwards acne has been on the increase and the reasons are not known well.
There are 2 types of acne -the subtype grouping is persistent or late- onset.
The former starts in the teenage years which fails to resolve by your thirty's. This affects 80-% of female acne cases.
However, late onset acne mostly starts after the age of 25 years, and prior to this there is no history of acne.
Acne can be worse during your menstruation.
Myth??
Is it related to food?
Controversial but there is some more recent research which suggests that certain foods may increase the aggravation of acne, but! it is limited-
So!¬ High GI foods sugar, soft drinks ., Pizzas, fast food etc release insulin spikes which in turn increase the sebum production which has been caused by an increase in testosterone creating the development of acne.
The thought that dairy is a contributory factor is still out for debate. There are a small amount of people who notice an increase in spots when they eat or drink dairy but if you feel that this is possibly a cause, before stopping dairy discuss with your GP practice, especially if young or pregnant.
It is not always possible to grow out of acne and certainly if you have certain conditions such as PCOS, it will erupt from time to time.
Acne is not treated by one treatment, it very often needs multiple treatments to achieve control so that skin is maintained at a reasonable level which can cause a lot of upset and frustration when you think you have combated one round of skin care and then it is back again.
If you can come to the mind set that the best outcome is to minimize the impact so that life can be enjoyable.
So how can I help to manage my acne?
What can Beaworthy Skin Care , Medical Aesthetics offer?
We have the Cube Light , put on a blue light for 15 minutes. The Blue light reduces the P bacteria and inhibits the sebaceous glands creating a calm skin which in turn reduces inflammation for sensitive problematic skin. We complete a pre treatment using Clinicare products which are vegan friendly and, as Swedish are renowned for their knowledge in skin care and effective treatments. We can follow the cube light treatment with a face mask for sensitive skin.
Plasma Pen
The Dr. Platon uses cold plasma shower technology, to deliver cold (non-thermal) atmospheric plasma directly to the skin’s surface. This plasma has powerful antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative properties, making it a highly effective tool for treating acne but also other inflammatory skin conditions- It is also licensed for 12 years and upwards at this clinic.
Chemical Peels
The CLINICCARE Pure Peel² is a superficial chemical peel that will remove the upper layers of the epidermis, the top layer. The NEW and improved formula now contains Azelaic acid, as well as Salicylic, Lactic and Glycolic acid.
This peel stimulates cell renewal and is suitable for treating acne, blackheads, comedones and the improvement of skin texture. It helps keep pores clean and unclogged and has keratolytic, anti-blackhead, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Suitable for Fitzpatrick skin types 1 to 4.
